DID YOU KNOW

weeds thrive in bare spots

After we do our job and eliminate the weeds, you could be left with bare spots that will need sod to ensure they don’t attract new weeds.

At Banfield's, we take pride in doing our job, and we do it well. Our expert team will apply top-quality weed control to eliminate the weeds, ensuring your lawn is healthy and free from unwanted growth. However, it's important to understand that weeds often fill voids in the lawn where grass is thin or sparse. Once we’ve done our job and successfully killed the weeds, you may be left with bare spots. This is where we’ll need to work together to ensure your lawn stays lush and green. By applying sod to these bare areas, we can prevent weeds from coming back and filling the void again, leaving you with the beautiful, healthy lawn you deserve.

Compacted Soil

Grass is a living organism, much like humans, and requires the right nutrients to thrive. Just as we need a balanced diet to stay healthy, grass needs specific nutrients to grow strong and lush. This is why we offer soil tests—an essential tool for understanding the unique needs of your lawn.

A nutrient deficiency causes lawn thinning because grass needs a balanced supply of nutrients to grow and remain healthy. Each nutrient plays a specific role in the grass’s development:

Nitrogen: Essential for vigorous growth and lush green color. A deficiency often results in yellowing leaves and slow growth, causing the lawn to thin out.   Phosphorus: Important for root development and overall plant strength. Without adequate phosphorus, grass roots may become weak, leading to poor growth and thinning.

Potassium: Helps with drought resistance and disease resistance. A lack of potassium makes grass more susceptible to stress and disease, which can contribute to thinning.

Iron: Crucial for chlorophyll production. Deficiency often causes yellowing between leaf veins (chlorosis), which can weaken grass and lead to thinning.

Calcium and Magnesium: Important for cell wall structure and enzyme function. Deficiencies can cause poor growth and weak grass, resulting in thinning.

Soil tests analyze the nutrient content and pH level of your soil, providing a detailed picture of its current condition. By conducting an individual soil test, we can pinpoint any deficiencies or imbalances specific to your lawn. This allows us to tailor our approach, ensuring that your lawn receives precisely what it needs to flourish.

Improper Mowing:

Cutting Too Short: Mowing grass too short (scalping) removes too much of the leaf surface, reducing the grass's ability to photosynthesize and produce food for growth. This can weaken the grass, making it more susceptible to diseases and pests, and leading to thinning.

Infrequent Mowing: Letting the grass grow too tall before mowing can cause stress when it’s cut. Long grass can also lead to uneven growth and may shade the soil, preventing proper sunlight and air circulation, which can contribute to thinning.

Uneven Mowing: Mowing in the same direction each time can lead to soil compaction and uneven grass growth. Changing mowing patterns can help ensure a more even lawn and reduce stress on the grass.

Dull Mower Blades: Using dull blades tears the grass rather than making a clean cut, which can cause stress and damage to the grass. This makes it harder for the grass to recover, potentially leading to thinning.

Improper Watering:

Overwatering: Watering too frequently can lead to shallow root growth as the grass does not need to extend roots deeply to find water. This can make the grass less drought-resistant and more prone to diseases. Excess moisture can also lead to fungal problems that weaken the lawn and cause thinning.

Underwatering: Insufficient watering causes grass to dry out and go dormant. Chronic underwatering can stress the grass, leading to weak growth and thinning. In extreme cases, the grass can die off in patches.

Inconsistent Watering: Irregular watering schedules can cause the grass to become uneven, with some areas receiving too much water and others too little. This inconsistency can lead to poor growth and thinning in some areas.

Watering at the Wrong Time: Watering during the hottest part of the day can lead to evaporation before the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Conversely, watering in the evening can promote fungal growth due to prolonged moisture on the grass overnight.

Compacted soil can cause lawn thinning for several reasons:

Root Restriction: Compaction makes the soil denser and less penetrable, restricting root growth. Grass roots need space to spread out and access water and nutrients. When compaction occurs, roots can become stunted, leading to weaker grass that struggles to establish itself.

Poor Water Infiltration: Compacted soil has reduced porosity, meaning water can’t easily penetrate the soil. This leads to poor water infiltration and increased runoff, causing dry spots and depriving the grass of the moisture it needs to grow.

Nutrient Limitations: Nutrients are often less available in compacted soil because the soil structure impedes the movement of nutrients to the root zone. This can result in nutrient deficiencies, further weakening the grass and contributing to thinning.

Reduced Air Exchange: Compaction limits the amount of air that reaches the soil and roots. Grass roots require oxygen to function properly. Without adequate air exchange, roots can become stressed and less effective at supporting healthy grass growth.

Increased Soil Erosion: Compact soil can lead to poor water absorption and runoff, which can erode the topsoil. The loss of topsoil means fewer nutrients and organic matter for the grass, contributing to thinning.

Weed and Pest Problems: Thinner grass due to compaction can create more opportunities for weeds and pests to establish themselves. Weeds often thrive in stressed and sparse lawns, further exacerbating thinning issues.

To combat these issues, we recommend a core aeration at least once a year.

Empower Growth

Core aeration is a lawn care process that involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass

roots more effectively. This process is especially helpful in compacted soils, where grass roots struggle to grow due to lack of access to

essential nutrients and air.

Here's how core aeration works:

   1.   Using the Aerator: A core aerator machine (either manually operated or motorized) is run across the lawn. It has hollow tines that

penetrate the soil and remove small plugs of soil and thatch (the layer of dead grass, roots, and organic material that builds up on the lawn).

   2.   Core Removal: The removed plugs, usually about 2-3 inches long and half an inch wide, are left on the surface of the lawn. These

plugs will break down over time, naturally returning nutrients to the soil as they decompose.

   3.   Improved Soil Conditions:

  • Loosening Soil: By creating holes, the soil is loosened, reducing compaction and allowing grass roots to grow deeper.

  • Enhanced Airflow: Air can now flow more freely into the soil, increasing oxygen availability for the roots.

  • Better Water Absorption: Water is able to penetrate the soil more easily, reducing runoff and improving moisture levels in the root zone.

  • Nutrient Access: Fertilizers and nutrients can reach the roots more effectively, supporting healthier growth.

Core aerations are typically done once or twice a year, depending on the soil type and grass conditions.

Lawns with heavy foot traffic or clay soil benefit the most from regular aeration.
